What is it and what is it used for?
AlovexLabiale contains the active substance aciclovir.
It belongs to a group of medicines called "antivirals" that fight infections caused by viruses. AlovexLabiale is specifically active against herpes viruses, including the herpes simplex virus.
AlovexLabiale is used to treat herpes simplex virus infections of the lips that recur over time (recurrent herpes labialis ) in adults and adolescents (over 12 years of age).
Contact your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 10 days.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use AlovexLabiale
- if you are allergic to aciclovir or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you are allergic to another medicine containing valaciclovir;
- if he is a child under 12 years of age.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using AlovexLabiale.
AlovexLabiale should only be applied to herpes simplex lesions on the lips; application to the mouth, eyes, nose, or vagina (mucous membranes) is not recommended because it may cause irritation.
Do not use AlovexLabiale to treat genital herpes.
Take special care to avoid accidental application in the eyes.
Use of the product, especially if prolonged, may cause allergic reactions. If this occurs, discontinue use and consult your doctor.
If you suffer from particularly severe forms of cold sores that recur over time, consult your doctor.
If you suffer from cold sores, avoid transmitting the virus, especially when small blisters (active lesions) are present (see the Health Education Notes section).
Do not use AlovexLabiale if you have a condition in which your body's defense systems are not functioning properly (AIDS or bone marrow transplant). In these cases, consult your doctor for treatment of cold sores and any other infections.
Health education notes
Cold sores are contagious, so you should not let other people touch the sores or use personal items that could spread the infection (such as a towel).
After applying the medicine, do not touch other parts of your body, especially your eyes, with your fingers until you have washed your hands. Always wash your hands before and after touching the lesions.
Avoid touching your eyes. Herpes infection of the eyes can lead to lesions on the outer surface of the eyes (corneal ulcers).
Avoid kissing - especially children - when you have lesions.
Avoid breaking small blisters and scratching scabs. Not only could you infect the lesions with other germs, but you could also infect your fingers with the virus.
Avoid sharing glasses, cutlery, etc. with other people.
Children
AlovexLabiale is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
• transient burning or pain after application;
• moderate dryness or flaking of the skin;
• itching sensation.
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)
• irritation and redness of the skin (erythema);
• skin inflammation (contact dermatitis) after application.
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)
• immediate allergic reactions including swelling of the face, lips, tongue and other parts of the body (angioedema) and hives.
