What is it and what is it for?
ALFA Antihistamine eye drops contain the active ingredients naphazoline nitrate which belongs to the group of decongestants of the inflamed ocular mucosa and thonzylamine hydrochloride which belongs to the group of antiallergics and relieves ocular inflammation caused by allergies.
ALFA Antihistamine eye drops are therefore useful in cases of allergy and inflammation of the mucosa covering the eyeball and the inner part of the eyelids (conjunctiva), accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), tearing, sensation of foreign bodies in the eye.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use ALFA Antihistamine Eye Drops
- if you are allergic to naphazoline nitrate, thonzylamine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you have a form of glaucoma called "closed-angle" glaucoma (an eye disease with increased pressure inside the eye) or other serious eye diseases;
- in children under twelve years of age;
- in case of concomitant use of antidepressant drugs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) (see also "Other medicines and ALFA Antihistamine eye drops");
- during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use only if clearly needed and under the direct supervision of a doctor (see also "Pregnancy and breastfeeding").
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using COLLIRIO ALFA Antihistaminico.
The eye drop solution should be used with caution if you suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension), increased thyroid function (hyperthyroidism), heart problems, bronchial asthma and hyperglycemia (diabetes).
Medical intervention is required in case of eye infections, presence of pus, foreign bodies in the eye, mechanical, chemical and heat damage.
Eye drops should always be kept out of the sight and reach of children as accidental ingestion may cause central nervous system depression characterised by marked sedation or muscle weakness (hypotonia).
Children and adolescents
Do not use in children under twelve years of age.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The use of ALFA Antihistamine eye drops can sometimes cause dilation of the pupil, high blood pressure (hypertension), heart problems, diabetes (hyperglycemia), increased pressure in the eye, nausea, headache.
Hypersensitivity phenomena may rarely occur.
If the side effects described above occur, treatment should be discontinued and a doctor should be consulted so that, if necessary, appropriate therapy can be instituted.
