What is it and what is it used for?
Deltarinol is a nasal medicine that contains two active ingredients: ephedrine and naphazoline, which belong to the category of nasal decongestants, which are used to reduce or eliminate swelling of the nasal mucous membranes (decongest).
This medicine is indicated to clear (decongest) a stuffy nose.
Contact your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 4 days of treatment.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use Deltarinol
- if you are allergic to ephedrine, naphazoline or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you suffer from one of the following diseases:
• heart disease,
• severe high blood pressure (hypertension),
• eye disease in which there is an increase in pressure inside the eye (acute angle-closure glaucoma),
• excessive production of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism),
• enlargement of the prostate (prostatic hypertrophy),
• tumor of an internal organ called the adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma),
• diabetes mellitus;
- if you are under 12 years of age (see "Children and adolescents");
- if you are undergoing treatment with antidepressant medicines or are within two weeks of stopping antidepressant treatment;
- if you are pregnant and/or breastfeeding (see "Pregnancy and breastfeeding");
- if you have a history of stroke or risk factors that may contribute to the development of stroke, due to the alpha sympathomimetic activity of the vasoconstrictor.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Deltarinolo:
- if you suffer from renal insufficiency (reduced kidney function);
- if you are an elderly person, due to the risk of urinary retention;
- if you suffer from cardiovascular diseases (diseases affecting the heart and/or blood vessels);
- if you suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure), even if not severe.
Prolonged use of medications that narrow blood vessels, such as Deltarinol (vasoconstrictor medications), can alter the normal function of the nasal mucosa and sinuses, possibly leading to drug tolerance (reduction in effectiveness). Repeated use for long periods may be harmful.
Use, especially if prolonged, of products administered topically to mucous membranes may cause an allergic reaction (sensitization). If this occurs, discontinue treatment and consult your doctor. However, if a complete therapeutic response is not seen within a few days, consult your doctor.
In patients with cardiovascular disease (disease affecting the heart and/or blood vessels), especially hypertensive patients (patients with high blood pressure), the use of nasal decongestants should always be subject to a doctor's discretion. Use caution and inform your doctor immediately if you experience difficulty breathing or chest pain.
The medicine should not be used orally: accidental oral use may cause toxicity. Avoid contact of the liquid with eyes. Prolonged use at excessive doses may cause toxicity.
Caution for athletes: this medicine contains substances prohibited for doping. Do not use the prescribed dosage or administration route (see "How to use Deltarinolo").
Children and adolescents
The medicine is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age (see "Do not use Deltarinol").
Accidental ingestion in children may cause an excessive tranquilizing effect (marked sedation).
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The medicine may facilitate the onset of local allergies (sensitization phenomena) and worsen congestion of the nasal mucous membranes.
After administration of Deltarinol, the following side effects may occur:
- rapid heartbeat (tachycardia),
- anxiety,
- restlessness,
- insomnia.
- nausea,
- heachache,
- feeling of dizziness,
- tremors,
- dry mouth,
- urinary disorders,
- alterations in blood circulation in the limbs,
- high blood pressure (arterial hypertension),
- slow heartbeat (bradycardia),
- irregular heartbeat (cardiac arrhythmias);
A risk of hemorrhagic stroke has been reported in patients using ephedrine hydrochloride-based drugs, mainly in cases of misuse or overdose.
Ischemic vascular accidents may occur.
