Name
DIARSTOP 1.5 mg hard capsules
Loperamide hydrochloride
What is it and what is it for?
DIARSTOP is an antidiarrheal used for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea by slowing intestinal motility. Contact your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after two days of treatment.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not take DIARSTOP
- If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substance or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- If you are pregnant or breast-feeding (see section “Pregnancy and breast-feeding”).
- If you need to maintain normal intestinal motility.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking DIARSTOP, even if you have experienced acute diarrhea in the past. Since diarrhea can cause significant fluid and salt loss, it is recommended to drink plenty of fluids to replace lost fluids. Taking aqueous solutions containing sugar and salts may be helpful.
Do not use this medicine for any purpose other than that intended (see section 1) and never take more than the recommended dose (see section 3). Serious heart problems (with symptoms including a rapid or irregular heartbeat) have been reported in patients who have taken too much loperamide, the active ingredient in DIARSTOP.
Children
DIARSTOP should not be given to children under 12 years of age.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, DIARSTOP can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Mild abdominal pain and dry mouth have been reported rarely.
Not known (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data): upper abdominal pain, abdominal pain spreading to the back, tenderness of the abdomen, fever, rapid pulse, nausea, vomiting, which may be symptoms of inflammation of the pancreas (acute pancreatitis).
If you experience any of these symptoms, stop using the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
