Description

Name
SODIUM PHOSPHATE AFOM
16% / 6% rectal solution

monobasic sodium phosphate and dibasic sodium phosphate

What is it and what is it for?
SODIUM PHOSPHATE AFOM contains the active ingredients sodium phosphate monobasic and sodium phosphate dibasic, which belong to the group of laxative medications used to soften and lubricate stool, facilitating its passage through the intestine and evacuation. This medicine is indicated for the treatment of constipation and for emptying the bowel during surgery or certain clinical procedures, such as radiological examinations or intestinal explorations.
Contact your doctor if you notice no improvement or if you notice worsening of symptoms after a few days.

What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use SODIUM PHOSPHATE AFOM
- if you are allergic to sodium phosphate monobasic, sodium phosphate dibasic or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you experience acute or unknown abdominal pain;
- if you have nausea or vomiting;
- if you suffer from blockage or narrowing of the intestine or anorectum (intestinal subocclusion or stenosis or anorectal stenosis);
- if you suffer from particular intestinal problems such as mechanical ileus, paralytic ileus, inflammation or other conditions that may increase the absorption of the medicine;
- if you experience problems in the lower part of the intestine such as rectal bleeding, pain, haemorrhoids or anal perforation;
- if you suffer from congenital or acquired megacolon;
- if you suffer from Hirschsprung's disease;
- if you are severely dehydrated;
- if the person who is to take the medicine is a child under 12 years of age;
- if you suffer from heart and/or kidney problems (severe renal failure);
- if you experience increased levels of phosphate in your blood (hyperphosphatemia);
Do not take other preparations containing sodium phosphates at the same time, including oral solutions or sodium phosphate tablets (see section “Other medicines and SODIUM PHOSPHATE AFOM”).

Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using SODIUM PHOSPHATE AFOM.
If you use this medicine excessively, frequently, or incorrectly, you may experience long-lasting diarrhea, resulting in a loss of water, minerals (especially potassium), and other essential nutrients. In more severe cases, you may experience dehydration and low blood potassium levels (hypokalemia), which can cause heart, nerve, and muscle problems, especially if you are also taking medications to stimulate heart function (cardiac glycosides), to increase urine production (diuretics), or medications called corticosteroids.
Drink fluids to prevent dehydration, especially if you are in conditions that may facilitate fluid loss, or if you are taking medicines that affect the kidneys, such as diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors), angiotensin receptor blockers (sartans), or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Since SODIUM PHOSPHATE AFOM contains sodium phosphates, there may be an increase in the amount of sodium and phosphate in the blood (hypernatremia, hyperphosphatemia) and a decrease in the amount of calcium and potassium in the blood (hypocalcaemia and hypokalemia), which can lead to involuntary muscle contraction (tetany) and kidney problems (renal failure).
If you use this medicine excessively or incorrectly, you may develop dependence (resulting in the need to gradually increase the dose), long-lasting (chronic) constipation and loss of normal intestinal function (intestinal atony).
Repeated use may cause addiction or harm.
Avoid prolonged use of this medicine. If you have been constipated for more than 2 weeks, if you notice changes in your usual bowel movements or stool characteristics, or if you experience no improvement after using this medicine, consult your doctor. Use this medicine with caution and after consulting your doctor if you are elderly or in poor health, or if you suffer from cardiovascular problems (uncontrolled blood pressure, heart disease), ascites, or rectal mucosal disorders (ulcers, fissures). If you encounter resistance when using the medicine, discontinue use immediately, as forced administration may cause injury.
If you experience constipation, first correct your eating habits by drinking adequate amounts of fiber and water (6-8 glasses a day) and engaging in physical activity. In most cases, a balanced diet rich in water and fiber (bran, vegetables, and fruit) can provide lasting relief. Many people mistakenly believe they are constipated if they fail to have a daily bowel movement, but this is often completely normal. True constipation occurs when bowel movements are fewer than usual and are associated with hard stools. If you experience recurring episodes of constipation, consult your doctor.
Children
This medicine should not be used in children under 12 years of age.
Elderly people
If you are elderly, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
