What is it and what is it for?
Gaviscon is a medicine that belongs to a class of drugs used to treat peptic ulcers (a sore that affects the lining of the stomach) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (a condition that occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the throat, the oesophagus).
Gaviscon is indicated in adults and adolescents (12 – 18 years) and works by relieving the symptoms of occasional heartburn.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not take Gaviscon
- If you are allergic to sodium alginate or sodium bicarbonate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Gaviscon.
In particular, tell your doctor or pharmacist if:
- suffer, or have suffered in the past, from a kidney disorder that compromises kidney function (renal failure).
Do not take this medicine for long-term treatment. If symptoms persist after 7 days of starting treatment, consult your doctor.
Children and adolescents
In adolescents (12-18 years) use only if strictly necessary and under strict medical supervision.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The side effects are listed below according to their frequency of occurrence:
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)
- allergic reactions, even severe ones (anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions)
- hypersensitivity reactions that may manifest themselves with redness of the skin accompanied by itching (hives)
- difficulty breathing (bronchospasm)
- increased gas formation in the stomach and intestines (flatulence), nausea
- swelling (edema)
