Carbocysteine
What is it and what is it for?
This medicine contains the active substance carbocisteine, which belongs to a group of medicines called mucolytics, used to facilitate the elimination of mucus from the airways.
LISOMUCIL TOSSE MUCOLYTIC is indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract diseases, characterised by cough and catarrh in adults.
Contact your doctor if you do not feel better or feel worse after 5 days.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not take LISOMUCIL COUGH MUCOLYTIC
- if you are allergic to carbocisteine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you suffer from a stomach or intestinal problem called an active gastroduodenal ulcer;
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (see section “Pregnancy and breastfeeding”).
LISOMUCIL COUGH MUCOLYTIC is contraindicated in children and adolescents.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking LISOMUCIL TOSSE MUCOLYTIC.
If, in addition to a cough, you experience fever and/or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor who will determine the appropriate treatment.
Caution is advised in elderly patients, asthmatic patients with a history of severe respiratory problems, those with a history of peptic ulcers, or those taking medications known to cause gastrointestinal bleeding. You should discontinue carbocisteine treatment if gastrointestinal bleeding occurs. This medicine should not be used in combination with cough suppressants.
For those who play sports: the use of medicines containing ethyl alcohol, including LISOMUCIL TOSSE MUCOLITICO syrup with sugar, may cause a positive result in anti-doping tests in relation to the blood alcohol concentration limits indicated by some sports federations.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Talk to your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:
Very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):
- upper abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea.
Frequency not known (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data):
- severe allergic reactions (anaphylactic, allergic skin rash, fixed drug eruption);
- skin irritations and diseases (Stevens-Johnson syndrome; bullous dermatitis; erythema multiforme;
toxic skin rash (skin rash) (in such cases, discontinue treatment and consult your doctor to establish appropriate therapy);
- epigastric discomfort;
- vomit;
- gastrointestinal bleeding (in such cases, discontinue treatment and consult your doctor to establish appropriate therapy).
