LENS MATERIALS AND CHARACTERISTICS
Material used for the lenses: POLYCARBONATE
POLYCARBONATE is used to make the lenses of Utilissimi reading glasses, the same polymer used to make corrective ophthalmic lenses for prescription glasses.
It is a difficult to work with but high-quality material, guaranteeing maximum resistance and visual transparency for clear vision and greater visual comfort over time.
NB: Generally, the lenses used for pre-assembled reading glasses are made of acrylic, which, due to its ease of processing, is much cheaper than polycarbonate. These lenses are often molded, not individually shaped, and are subject to yellowing over time, thus compromising visual clarity and, above all, compromising sharp vision.
Focal centers aligned horizontally
The lenses of extremely useful reading glasses have horizontally aligned focal centers: this means that the focal centers of both lenses—right and left—are positioned, horizontally, on the same axis. To understand the importance of this feature, let's do an exercise: let's look at a distant image. Our eyes will be parallel to each other. Now, if we read anything from 35-40 cm away, our eyes will no longer be parallel but will converge on the area we're reading. This trajectory passes through the lenses, which, if the focal centers were NOT horizontally aligned, would "fall" into an "aberrated" optical zone, resulting in poor vision and poor visual comfort, sometimes manifested by headaches.
Aspherical lenses
Lenses for correcting simple presbyopia can be of two very specific and substantially different types: spherical lenses and aspherical lenses. The lenses of reading glasses that are very useful are aspherical lenses.
In spherical lenses, the two lens curves, the inner and outer, are simply portions of spherical caps. In aspherical lenses, however, the two lens curves, the inner and outer, are more complex curves, such as ellipses, which require special processing to create.
The advantage of aspheric lenses is a significant improvement in image quality, a reduction in distortion at the sides of the lens, and a reduced magnification effect on the eye.
MATERIALS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FRAMES
Frames made of non-recycled polycarbonate
Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic polymer obtained from carbonic acid with mechanical characteristics of high strength and maximum elasticity.
To get an idea of the exclusive and unique characteristics of Polycarbonate, it is enough to mention some uses:
- Optician: for corrective lenses
- Cell Phones & Smartphones: as a material for manufacturing the external casing to prevent deterioration due to falls, abrasions, etc.
- Helmets and headlight covers
- Military Sector: for bulletproof vests and riot shields
- Aeronautics: for porthole canopies of modern airplanes
- Electric lighting: for transparent objects (ceiling lights, street lamps, etc.)
To ensure the resistance and elasticity characteristics of our reading glasses, we use a NON-recycled polycarbonate polymer.
The regenerated polymer would have a much lower cost but no longer possesses the original qualitative characteristics, as it undergoes a mutation caused by the melting process at high temperatures.
Objects made from regenerated polymers (including eyeglass frames) may be aesthetically pleasing, but consumers will be misled into thinking that the product doesn't perform as it should and will find it stiff, inelastic, uncomfortable, with a shorter color lifespan, and potentially causing allergies and other issues.
METAL frames
Some Utilissimi frames are made of nickel-free metal alloy with galvanic treatments and non-toxic paints.
