Beclometasone dipropionate
What is it and what is it for?
RINOCLENIL is a medicine that contains beclometasone dipropionate, an active ingredient belonging to the cortisone group that reduces swelling and inflammation of the airways.
RINOCLENIL is used to treat or prevent nasal inflammation (rhinitis) due to allergies (both seasonal and perennial) or vasomotor alterations, which can cause: sneezing, runny nose, itching and a feeling of obstruction in the nose, decreased sense of smell.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not take RINOCLENIL if:
• are allergic (hypersensitive) to beclometasone dipropionate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6) or to other medicines containing cortisone;
• has tuberculosis or a viral infection located in the nose (local);
RINOCLENIL is not suitable for children under 6 years of age.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor before taking RINOCLENIL if:
• is undergoing therapy with cortisone as side effects may occur due to the passage of the drug into the bloodstream;
• has inflammation of the nose or nasal cavities as a whole (paranasal sinuses), due to microorganisms;
• has ulcers in the nose;
• has had trauma or surgery to the nose.
Contact your doctor if you experience blurred vision or other visual disturbances.
Take special care if
• you are switching from systemic corticosteroid treatment (e.g. tablets) to RINOCLENIL therapy; this is particularly important if you have impaired adrenal function;
• notice worsening of symptoms or watery, itching or red eyes, due to a severe allergy.
IN ALL THESE CASES, CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR WHO WILL BE ABLE TO PRESCRIBE APPROPRIATE TREATMENT.
Children and adolescents
Children taking RINOCLENIL should have their height measured regularly, as prolonged treatment with nasal corticosteroids may slow growth. If this occurs, consult your doctor, as treatment may need to be adjusted.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Following the instructions in this leaflet reduces the risk of side effects.
If you use RINOCLENIL, especially in high doses and/or for prolonged periods of time, you may notice:
burning sensation, irritation (possible sensitization phenomena), dry nose;
nosebleeds (epistaxis), perforation of the nasal septum, increased pressure in the eye with possible worsening of vision (glaucoma), blurred vision (frequency not known);
adrenal suppression (with symptoms such as loss of appetite, low blood pressure, abdominal pain, weight loss, tiredness, headache, nausea, vomiting), weakening of the bones (osteoporosis), stomach or duodenal (peptic) ulcer.
IF YOU NOTICE ANY OF THE ABOVE EFFECTS, STOP TAKING RINOCLENIL AND CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.
Growth retardation has also been reported in children and adolescents taking intranasal corticosteroids (frequency unknown).
