What is it and what is it for?
Streptosil with Neomycin is a medicine to be applied to the skin that contains neomycin sulphate and sulphathiazole.
Neomycin sulfate is an antibiotic. Sulfathiazole is an antibacterial. They are used to treat bacterial skin infections.
This medicine is indicated in adults and children for the treatment of superficial skin infections:
- folliculitis (infection of the hair follicle, the structure that surrounds the hair root);
- furunculosis (inflammation of the skin characterized by the presence of boils);
- minor burn wounds;
- infected wounds.
Talk to your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a few days.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use Streptosil with Neomycin
- if you are allergic to sulphatiazole or neomycin sulphate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- for ear infections.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Streptosil with neomycin.
This medicine is not for ocular use; it is for external use only and should not be ingested.
Do not use Streptosil with Neomycin for a prolonged period of time or in large quantities on large surfaces of skin, as the neomycin sulphate contained in this medicine, if absorbed, can cause kidney and ear problems.
Do not use this medicine if you have:
- secondary skin infections (infections that develop on existing skin lesions);
- extensive burns;
- trophic ulcers (skin lesions due to impaired blood circulation);
- conditions in which neomycin absorption is possible.
If you use this product for a prolonged period of time it may cause allergies.
If you use this medicine for a long time and incorrectly, you may experience overgrowth of non-susceptible bacteria or fungi and resistance to antibiotics, making the condition worse.
If this occurs, you should stop treatment and contact your doctor.
Infants and children
Use Streptosil with Neomycin in early childhood only if necessary, under the direct supervision of a doctor. Do not use this medicine on large areas of broken skin in infants with diaper rash, as the diaper may act as an occlusive dressing and facilitate the absorption of neomycin.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The frequency of these side effects is not known.
Infections and infestations
Bacterial and fungal superinfections.
Immune system disorders
Hypersensitivity reactions.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders
Itching.
Systemic disorders and conditions related to the administration site
Swelling, redness.
